Lexus ES reliability - how does it compare?

In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"?

Results are updated four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner.

I’ve started collecting data on only one year of the ES so far, 2007, but the sample is very small. Additional cars for any year would be very helpful.

Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey and an approximate odometer reading at the end of each quarter.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge.

Lexus is in the top of reliability as compared to any auto maker in the market as of today, 2007.  You can check Consumer Reports to back up this statement.

If Consumer Reports provided sufficient, and sufficiently reliable, information, I wouldn't be conducting my own research.

With regard to the latest ES 350, it'll be November before it'll be possible to say what impact early transmission replacements are having.

I'd like more detailed information, sooner.

I'm collecting data on any model with enough interested owners. Sadly, neither my wallet nor my garage is large enough for me to buy one of each.

Lexus' new LS 460 flagship sedan has captured a lot of attention for one feature in particular: its ability to park itself. what transmission failures are you refering to

The new six-speed automatic used in the V6 Camry and ES 350 is requiring early replacment in many cars. I don't know the actual percentage, might just be 10 percent, but that's still many cars.

If I had more owners participating in my research, I'd actually know the percentage.

For now, check any active Camry or Lexus ES forum for reports of failures.

i actually work for lexus as a tech and have not seen any failures, but they are replacing some due to a flare shift. there is a technical service bulletin for this concern. im not sure about any actual failures to the transmissions but as far as the flare shift concern, ive only seen two transmissions replaced.

I probably should not have said "failures," so I've edited my post. This flaring problem is the one I'm aware of. I think I experienced this problem myself in a 2006 Saab 9-3 Aero I test drove, which uses an Aisin six-speed automatic that might be related to this one.

Do you work for Lexus itself, or in one dealer's service department? I'll grant that even if it's the latter two transmissions is probably fewer than one percent of all ES 350's the dealer has sold.
