In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"?

I’ll also be updating results four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner.

I haven't started collecting data on any year of the Lexus RX yet because too few owners are signed up to participate.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge.

Details: Vehicle reliability research

Comments, questions, and suggestions welcome.

consumer reports is the best place to look for unbiased reviews on vehicle.

the rx is highly rated and reccommended.  I don't think they have had any issues other than the normal wear and tear.

CR is not the best place to look. That's why I'm putting so much time and energy into this reseach. For my main critique of CR, go here:

Consumer Reports critique

For one thing, my results tend to average over ten months "fresher" than theirs. I'm about to post results for the year ending June 30, 2007. Their resutls are still based on the year ending March 31, 2006, sixteen months ago. Do you want to know how reliable a car was over a year ago, when it was over a year younger, or how reliable it has been recently?

We had a 2001 AWD RX300 with 66,700 miles showing symptoms. They were as follows: hesitation between 2nd and 3rd gear, shuddering while
engaging from park to reverse. When brought to the dealers attention they could not duplicate the problem hot or cold. At 70,395 miles the
transmission failed completely. Keep in mind the factory warranty on the power train is 6 years/70,000. I had the car towed to a Gibraltar Transmission outlet in Van Nuys. The manager showed me that I was third RX300 in two weeks to need repairs. While purchasing a new RX400h I saw the power train warranty in the sales brochure. I was not aware that I might have a possible warranty claim. We had the car picked up by the dealer. At first they would not pay for the repair. With some good natured persistence we were able to get it resolved. Make sure you have all symptoms documented. I am a Consumers Reports subscriber and used to believe everything they said. I bought a bad JVC television and now this. Also, if you were not aware, CR uses outside labs to do some product testing. They had to retract an article about bad child car safety seats.

sorry to hear about your troubles.  It should have been fairly easy... have all the problems been worked out?  Van Nuys so I am assuming you went to Keyes Lexus?

This was the most hand wringing stressful negotiation I had to go through in 7 years.  The Lexus shop was not in Van Nuys.

Now just a few owners short of the minimum needed to get started with the 2004.  Results on over 60 other models next month.

The Lexus RX reliability is quite great with awesome control and power. I have had one for a while but now I just read about the how excellent the new rx hybrid is on an auto news site which said it is a hybrid luxury car and on my behalf I think it is a very reliable vehicle.
